๐Ÿ•น๏ธ DualShock 3 (PS3) Not Supported โ€” Alternatives and Fix Guide

โŒ Not Supported

DualShock Calibration GUI does not support DualShock 3. The firmware architecture, HID protocol, and calibration register layout are completely different from DS4/DualSense. There is no planned DS3 support.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ DS3 Stick Drift Fixes

1

IPA / WD-40 Contact Cleaner cleaning

Same non-invasive technique as DS4. Apply IPA or WD-40 Contact Cleaner around the stick base gap, rotate through full range, allow drying. 40โ€“60% success rate for debris/oxidation drift.

2

Windows joy.cpl dead zone adjustment

Install SCP Toolkit or DsHidMini driver to make DS3 visible to Windows. Open joy.cpl (Win+R โ†’ joy.cpl). Select DS3 โ†’ Properties โ†’ Calibrate. Software-layer only โ€” applies to that Windows machine only.

3

DS3 Input & Report Inspector (diagnostic)

Open-source tool at github.com/lewy20041/DS3_Input_And_Report_Inspector for raw HID report reading. Diagnostic only โ€” cannot write calibration data.

4

Joystick module replacement

DS3 uses ALPS analogue joystick modules. Replacement modules are inexpensive ($2โ€“5). No software calibration tool available post-install โ€” results depend on module manufacturing tolerances.

โ“ DualShock 3 FAQ

Why is DualShock 3 not supported?
DualShock 3 uses a fundamentally different firmware architecture than DS4 and DualSense. The calibration commands discovered through reverse engineering of DualShock 4 firmware do not exist in DS3 firmware. DS3 also uses a different USB HID protocol โ€” it uses proprietary Sony HID reports that require a different driver stack. Adding DS3 support would require a separate, complete reverse-engineering effort of DS3 firmware from scratch.
What can I use for DualShock 3 stick issues?
For DS3 HID inspection and diagnostics, DS3 Input & Report Inspector (github.com/lewy20041/DS3_Input_And_Report_Inspector) is the best available open-source tool. For stick drift on DS3, the most effective non-invasive fix is IPA or WD-40 Contact Cleaner cleaning โ€” the same technique as DS4. DS3 uses analog Hall Effect sticks in later revisions and potentiometers in earlier revisions, so replacement options vary by revision.
Does DS3 work on PC at all?
Yes, DualShock 3 works on PC using the SCP Toolkit or DsHidMini driver. These provide XInput or DirectInput emulation. Once connected via SCP or DsHidMini, Windows joy.cpl can be used for basic dead zone calibration. This is a software-layer fix only โ€” it does not write to the controller firmware.
